One of the most common types of sensors is those made to measure temperature. Pressure sensors feature in a wide range of manufacturing and industrial systems. The sensors are used to control and measure fluid, gas or air pressure. Most are built using quartz or piezoelectric sensors. They are built to detect many different types of pressure, such as gauge pressure (atmospheric conditions), differential pressure (pressure between two points), or absolute pressure (similar to a vacuum). The analog outputs are built to measure current, such as 4-20mA, or voltage, such as 1-5V. The output information can vary to match the specific situation, and includes PSI, kg/cm2, or bars.


Even though the pressure sensors are mostly used in industrial systems, they also feature in designs for a wide range of consumer products, such as automotive seats and mattresses.




Capacitive sensing has seen a significant increase in popularity in recent years with the development of touch screen devices, such as smartphones and tablets. However, it has previously been used to detect material properties, humidity and fluid levels. This type of sensor is made using multiple layers and connects to a circuit board. The sensor has the ability to detect the location or movement of the finger on the screen. It is only able to detect capacitance related to the skin, and isn’t intended to work with fingernails.


When it comes to controlling capacitive sensing, the fingers do not come into direct contact with the sensing unit. A great benefit of this is the low risk of mechanical wear after regular use. Any onscreen movement is sensed by an IC. This information is digitized and passed on to a microcontroller to let the smartphone complete the particular action.

What is a GPS Antenna?

A GPS antenna is a device that helps boost the reception signal to a GPS unit, whether it is a standalone unit or an embedded unit. Often a GPS antenna is used in a situation where the GPS unit itself is somehow removed from a line of sight to the sky, as in a car, to help the GPS “see” the sky without having to be moved. GPS antennae may be purchased for a range of budgets, or cheaper home versions can be made with fairly common components.


GPS, or the Global Positioning System, is a satellite system originally developed by the United States Department of Defense. It utilizes more than two dozen satellites orbiting the Earth to allow receivers on the ground or in the sky to tell exactly where they are, by receiving heads off of multiple satellites. Using this location, devices can detect not just latitude and longitude, but also altitude, and even heading and speed. For years, GPS was reserved for military use in the United States, but following a directive by President Reagan in 1983 it became open for civilian use.


Civilian GPS contains certain restrictions, imposed by the US government to make sure hostile forces don’t use the technology in missiles. As a result, consumer GPS isn’t capable of operating when moving at more than 515 m/s at more than 60,000 feet (18 km). Throughout the eighties and early nineties GPS was used primarily in commercial avenues, such as on fishing boats, in airplanes, or for geographic surveying. In the late nineties it began gaining popularity for consumers for hiking or for driving, and by the new millennium cars were being equipped with built-in GPS to give driving directions, and cell phones began having included GPS for directions and location.


A GPS unit has a built in antenna, which is usually quite small and located inside of the unit. While this will likely function in ideal circumstances, such as when in a desert moving at slow speeds or staying still, it may not work as well as one would like in more trying circumstances. A GPS unit likes to have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky, to best receive the microwave signals that allow it to communicate with satellites. For GPS units inside of cars, this can be problematic, so often an external GPS antenna will be used, mounted to the outside of the car with a magnet, and connected to the unit itself by a cable.


In situations such as heavy canopy cover while hiking, the small GPS antennas built into a consumer unit also may not be able to ideally communicate with the satellites. In this case, a larger, more advanced GPS antenna helps the unit overcome the environmental challenges, to give a clear signal. Similarly, moving at high velocities can overwhelm a smaller, less sophisticated antenna, and an external device can boost the signal.


There are a number of different types of GPS antenna, with the patch and Quad Helix styles being the most popular. Both are roughly equal in efficacy, although many people find the quad helix to have a slight bit more sensitivity. Other types of antennae include microstrips, of which the patch is one configuration, planar rings, and spiral helices.

What is the RJ11 Connector and Where it is Used?

RJ is the connector used in telephone wiring. RJ is the short form for ‘Registered Jack’ and it is a physical connector interface used in telephone wire terminals. There are many design standards for registered jacks and these include RJ11, RJ14, and RJ45 and so on.


An RJ11 Jack has a total number of six connector positions, but out of the many positions only two or four are utilized. The RJ connector comes in two forms – one which is the flat satin form and the other, which is the unshielded twisted pair form. It is the most common of registered jacks and is used mostly in homes and offices across North America. Since an RJ11 jack uses two out of six positions, it can be wired with a 6P2C modular jack variety. However, you should note that such jacks are rarely used.

In addition to being used in telephone wire terminals, RJ11 connectors are also used in selective ringers, anti-tinkle circuitry and in selective ringers. The powered version of RJ11 connectors, low voltage is carried by pins 2 and pin 5. The power to these pins comes from a transformer that is plugged into the wall. Most often, there is a comparison made between RJ11 and the RJ45 jack. RJ11 is used for the purpose of connecting telephone systems, but RJ45 is used for connecting system in a network. RJ45 jack is bigger and it can accommodate more wires that RJ11.


The RJ11 is the most common type of registered today and it is used for the purpose of terminating phone lines. Type of Wifi Antenna

When deciding to deploy a Wireless LAN (WLAN) solution within a building or facility, there are many factors to consider. The first most obvious consideration is the radio or RF coverage required within the facility, the size and design of the facility will determine the number of wireless access points required to provide that coverage. Another consideration will be selection of the appropriate wireless antennas to provide the desired coverage.

Before we get into a description of different types of wifi antenna, how much gain they produce and what type of radiation pattern they typically provide, I must stress that when deploying a wireless LAN for the first time, it is very important to have a wireless site survey conducted to determine the siting of the access points and also highlight any problem areas where specialist wireless antennas may be required.

A Wireless Antenna will normally be designed to work efficiently over a narrow band of frequencies, the wider the range of frequencies the antenna will operate over, the more “Broadband” the antenna is said to be. Wifi antennas will operate either in the 2.4Ghz ISM band or the 5Ghz band, so the antenna must be designed to operate within those specific frequency ranges.

Let’s take a look at some of the antenna types available and how they typically perform:

 Omni-Directional Antennas

This type of Antenna, as previously stated normally produces an isotropic radiation pattern that is often referred to as a “Doughnut” shape. It is worth bearing in mind that true isotropic antennas tend to be purely theoretical and other types of omni-directional antennas are compared to that of an isotropic design.

 Vertical Omni

A vertical omi-directional antenna is usually based on a dipole design where the radiation pattern of a dipole antenna is 360 degrees in the horizontal plane, with the vertical plane varying depending on whether the dipole is vertical or not. A vertically orientated dipole antenna normally has a 75 degree radiation pattern. Dipole antennas are normally said to have a gain, on average of a little over 2Db.

 Ceiling domes

These antennas are designed to be mounted on the ceiling, above false ceilings or even on walls. Because of their less obstructed view, they tend to have a higher gain of around 3Db.

 Rubber Ducks

Rubber duck wireless antennas were first used with early walkie talkies as a cut down whip aerial designed at one quarter wavelength. Because of this they are termed electrically short antennas, usually having a wire type element covered with a rubber sheathing, making them flexible and robust. They are vertically mounted and have a 360 degree radiation pattern similar to that of a half-wave dipole. These are the antennas that you see on most mass produced wireless routers for the home market.

 Directional Antennas

Reflecting and radiating elements are added to the standard di-pole design to concentrate the signal energy in a specific direction. Directional antennas can give a gain over the standard isotropic antenna of between around 3dB as much as 20Db.


Yagi antennas are referred to as high gain antennas and have multiple reflector and radiating elements to give a typical gain of between 12 and 20dB. They are often used as outdoor antennas and will have a typical horizontal beamwidth of around 30 degrees and 15-25 degrees vertical beamwidth.


The most common type of dish Wireless Antenna is the parabolic dish, which uses a curved parabola shaped dish to direct the wireless radio waves to a narrow beamwidth. These type of antennas are extremely highly directive and can also have extremely high gain, as much as 40 or 50dB. One of the design factors is that the dish will be larger than the wavelength of the design radio frequency. Most often used for point to point wireless communications links. Outdoor wireless bridges will often use a Parabolic Dish Antenna.

Patch Antenna

You will often find Patch Antennas deployed in office type environments, normally attached high up on a wall, or sometimes ceiling mounted. Typical horizontal beamwidth is around 70-80 degrees, but this can extend to around 100 degrees. Construction is normally a pair of metal plates that are actually the antenna elements, which together make up the transmission line. They are normally of half-wavelength design, with typical gain being around 2dB, similar to a traditional dipole antenna.

Of course, there are many other variations of wifi antenna which have not had a mention here, but this article was designed to give the layman a simple explanation of basic Wireless Antenna types.

Following a successful Wireless Site Survey, the majority of access points in anything but the smallest office environment will normally employ dome antennas or vertical dipoles. What Is It About A Pallet Truck?
